Inscriptions and Lettering

With training in traditional lettercut inscription and a comprehensive knowledge of historic letterforms, we will design and carve layouts to fulfill all manner of briefs. We can gild or paint incised letters, as well as execute surface brush lettering.

Depending on the scale of the brief, we will work with the client to draft layout options before working up a finalised scale drawing for approval. This drawing is then used directly to trace down the design on to the timber before the inscription and any elements in relief are cut by hand. We can prepare plaques and panels in any variety of timber, or carve existing boards on site or in the workshop.

We have years of experience in the addition of names and dates to all manner of commemorative boards. Whether it be incised, painted or gilded, we can precisely and sensitively match the existing lettering to keep the heritage and quality of the building or institution preserved. Often with these open-ended memorials, we find that the standard of craftsmanship has slipped through the decades, with some even opting for machine-made solutions. We take a traditional approach and aim to revive the artistry of old. We also make repairs to wooden furnishings that have been damaged or mistreated.

Lettering is an art form by its very nature, and as well as traditional, formal layouts we relish any opportunity to design more custom compositions and letterforms. There is an honesty and expressive power to hand-cut lettering, thoughtfully spaced by skilled craftsmen.
