One Day Letter Cutting Class
Carving a Custom Door Number Plaque
Saturday 10am - 5pm
£140
During this introductory course you will hand carve an oak plaque with a name or number of your choosing. No previous experience is necessary.
You will work with a sans-serif alphabet to design your own layout, before transferring and cutting your inscription into a piece of wood. We will teach some basic theory behind traditional lettering, before guiding you through the practical techniques.
Lettering is a specific form of carving, requiring a different approach and tools, but we aim to provide you with all the knowledge and confidence to continue carving in the comfort of your own home.
The day will begin with a practical demonstration of the tools and techniques involved, followed by an hour of practice carving on a waste board. This will give you a chance to experience the physical challenges of the carving while considering your own personal design. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided throughout.
For the second half of the morning, we will work on your individual layouts. A brief introduction to some design principles before you compose your inscription using our simple alphabet/numbers printed at various scales.
We break for an hour lunch at 1 pm, and will provide a homemade vegetarian stew/soup and bread if desired, or else there is a wealth of local cafes/restaurants nearby.
After lunch, the designs will be transferred to the timber, and some extra time set aside for practice before you embark on your final plaque. Once carved, we can cut and finish the plaque, adding fixings and edge details if desired. You will walk away with a beautiful finished piece to be displayed at home or gifted.
